Pressure
Equipment Directive 97 23 EC
TÜV SÜD America*
is a Notified Body for the European Union Pressure Equipment Directive
97 23 EC, which became mandatory on May 29, 2002. With over 130 years
of experience with pressure vessel safety, TÜV SÜD is well positioned
to assist your organization in achieving proper certification and market
access.
The Pressure Equipment Directive 97 23 EC (PED) was adopted
into all European national pressure equipment codes & ordinances,
and represents one uniform law for pressure equipment being sold in the
European Community. The PED applies to all pressure equipment sold in
the European Union with a maximum permissible pressure exceeding 0.5 bar.
Equipment directly affected by the PED include,
for example:
- Pressure vessels
- Heat exchangers
- Steam boilers and components
- Pressure gas cylinders
- Piping & pipelines
- Storage tanks
- Safety & pressure accessories (safety,
relief valves, regulators, rupture disks)
The concept of pressure equipment also includes
piping sections and assemblies of pressure equipment with piping, control
and safety accessories, etc.
The Pressure Equipment Directive 97 23 EC covers essential requirements, but
does not give specifics on design, material, manufacturing and testing.
These questions may be answered through application of recognized national
codes and standards, and through the application of state-of-the-art technology.
Transportable Pressure Equipment Directive
(TPED)
TÜV SÜD America is also a Notified Body for the Transportable
Pressure Equipment Directive 2010/35/EU. Similar to the PED, this
directive was designed to achieve the free movement of transportable pressure
equipment containing dangerous goods within the European Community by
road and by rail, and links in many respects with the older European Agreements
Concerning the International Carriage of Dangerous Goods by Road and by
Rail (ADR/RID).
The TPED addresses the safety and requirements
of pressure equipment used exclusively for the transport of dangerous
goods between community territories.
