Verification of Greenhouse Gas EmissionsGreenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide are commonly ![]() believed to contribute to global warming, otherwise known as climate change. In response, various countermeasures have been implementedworldwide such as the Kyoto Protocol and the European Emissions Trading Scheme. Currently there are no nationwide mandatory regulations in the U.S. governing the amount of carbon dioxide an organization can emit into the atmosphere. However, the state of California has enacted a voluntary Greenhouse Gas Registry called the California Climate Action Registry (CA Registry). Participants in this program compile an annual inventory report summarizing greenhouse gases emitted by various sources throughout their organization. The State of California "commits to use its best efforts to ensure that organizations that register emission results with the Registry receive appropriate consideration" in the case of any future state or federal mandatory system. Benefits of CA Registry participation include reducing regulatory risk, mitigating operational inefficiencies, participating in policy development and demonstrating environmental leadership. For more information, visit www.climateregistry.org. As an approved certifier for the CA Registry GHG (Greenhouse Gas) reporting program, TÜV SÜD America provides organizations preparing Greenhouse Gas Emission Inventories with third-party verification services to help prepare for current or future GHG reporting regulations. These services include:
TÜV SÜD America is approved by the California Energy Commission (CEC) as certifier for the California Climate Action Registry; accreditation verifies that TÜV SÜD America is experienced in providing GHG emissions certification services to program participants. In addition, TÜV SÜD America's parent company, TÜV Süddeutschland, has a remarkable record regarding climate change related services. We anticipate receiving official accreditation as an "operational entity" by the UN (FCCC) allowing us to validate and verify projects under the Kyoto Protocol's Clean Development Mechanism. TÜV Süddeutschland was the first certifier to verify a project in Chile for the World Bank's Prototype Carbon Fund. TÜV SÜD has verified Greenhouse Gas Inventories of European-based global companies preparing for the European Emissions Trading scheme; and with our California Climate Action Registry accreditation has the local experience and know-how to assist U.S. organizations with similar services.
